When we first arrived shopping for anything was a real challenge and not only because of lanaguage difficulties. At home we could find almost anything we needed in a department store. Here it was, well, something of an adventure.
Now that we are more confident, it is actually sort of fun.

Shopping excursions start by choosing
transportation. The boys prefer becaks.

Of course you should know where you are
going. It can get confusing...

You are not always sure where what
you want is sold.

Once you think you have found the shop
you need, you can count on a parking
attendent to guide you to a spot.

There are small western type markets...

and no need to worry about wornout shoes
as there is an abundance of shoe repair
shops.

Thankfully there are also seamstresses
who can sew clothes that hide our cow
sized bones.

For those lucky enough to be truly petite,
there is much to choose from at the local
dress shops.

Most vendor carts specialize in one item.

Pasar Aceh, the largest traditional market,
is the most frequented.

Inside the long narrow rows of crowded
shops with metal & cloth roofing it can get
pretty hot.

Each shop owner has only a small space.
They keep it stock full.

Unlike the United States, you never
pay asking price here. You always bargain.

It is hot & crowded. The pushing and
shoving can get annoying in the heat,
but shop keepers are always helpful and
friendly.

It is great when we can end a shopping trip
with an ice cream sundae!
