Here water can come from the city, or most often private wells. When the wells go dry or the city water isn't flowing, you pay a company to come & fill them. This water is only for cleaning or bathing with.

Drinking water must be bought. We buy 5 gallon jugs that we put in a dispenser. If you drink the water that comes from the sink it can make you sick.

Most people do not have hot running water, or showers, or washing machines. Clothes are washed by hand. Bathrooms have baks and pails.

Actually it is kind of fun to throw the water around. Baks are good because when the electricity goes out so the water pump isn't working, you do not worry as there is a bak full of water you can use.

Some families do not have running water or baks in their homes.

They bath in the river and wash their clothes there too.

When the water drains from the sink it does not go through underground pipes. It runs into open dug ditches, which drain into the river, which flows into the ocean.

In big houses like ours, most of the solid waste from the kamar kecil (bathroom) goes the house septic tank, but sometimes it overflows. You have to be careful not to fall into one of these ditches when skateboarding or bike riding!
